The Way They Live (2)

Philip Gorrivan Design firm is known for its tailored and modern design, often using elements from the past, which evoke an eclectic, polished and chic style.

Here are some photos of his own apartment in NY where he lives with his wife and two school age children.

Notes:
- I love his statement: "I think neatness is essential—it’s essential to life.’
- He speaks french (thanks to his Moroccan mum)
- He did not formally study design.
- He was named one of House & Garden’s “New Tastemakers of 2007".

Paul Newman

Paul Newman, an ambitious, intellectual actor and a passionate student of his craft, achieved what most of his peers find impossible: remaining a major star into craggy, charismatic old age. He acted in more than 65 movies over more than 50 years. He was also an entrepreneur, a philanthropist and a racecar driver. He died on Sept. 27 at his home in Westport, Conn., at 83.

" Old Wares"

I have read this sentence "Do the Planet a favor, buy antiques and vintage design" on my favorite site. My first thought was "Yeah ...well, I wish I could afford to buy all these beautiful antiques.

When I thought about it a little more the second parallel came into my mind and I realized buying vintage or used furniture is actually "green". If someone gives a second chance of life to a beautiful vase or a little run down solid timber table or... it doesn’t end up dumped into landfills we are doing our planet a big favor. There is little environmental impact from vintage furniture. No further resources are used to manufacture it, which makes it a viable green alternative.
For me personally there is a big bonus - the thrill of the hunt. You start digging through those little shops, local antique places, junk shops, garage sales, flea markets, thrift shops, eBay, the Salvation Army and other charity stores, and sometimes you hit the jackpot and find a vintage piece that is highly collectible or simply you find little treasure special just for you.

Vintage is the way to go.

BACK to BLACK

"Every room can use a touch of black" is so true and is something to remember when it comes to interiors.

Bright colors are taking a back seat to black.

Back to Black, the name of Songstress Amy Winehouse's soulful vocal, is enough to inspire the return to

classic, forever black.  Amy's song (listen to it here) is my inspiration for The Return to Black, in fashion as well as in Interiors.

Think style, think sophistication, think timeless.

A room needn't have a total makeover to make a statement with black - punctuate a neutral interior with a sleek black table lamp.

A TOUCH OF BLACK in a room can act like a punctuation mark!

This gourd lamp with black silk oval shade is from the stylish Porta Romana lamp company in the UK and is a timeless classic.

Want to add drama to a room quickly and inexpensively, try painting or wallpapering a feature wall black.

Black can act as a neutral because there is no color it doesn't go with.

Garden

After checking Habitually Chic blog I ( and many other DIY enthusiast ) I felt inspired, to create, produce, construct ....simply to do something.
After few hours in the garden I am sunburned, exhausted but beautifully happy. My garden is pruned, trimmed, raked ....I took these Before (my blog entry from August) - After (today)pictures to share with you. I planted my small herb patch and it took only few weeks to go from nothing close to something. Only couple more weeks and a harvest can start.
